The functions of a business refer to the activities and processes necessary to achieve its goals and objectives. These functions can be divided into several areas, including:

  1. Production: Production refers to the process of creating goods and services in a business organization. It involves the transformation of raw materials, labor, and capital into finished products that are ready for consumption by customers. Production is a key function of a business and is closely related to operations, as it encompasses all the activities involved in creating and delivering products or services to customers.
  2. Distribution: Distribution refers to the process of making a product or service available for use or consumption by customers. It involves the movement of goods from the point of production to the point of consumption, including storage, transportation, and delivery.
  3. Marketing: Marketing is a function of a business that is focused on promoting and selling products or services to customers.   6. Human Resources Management: Human resources (HR) is a function of a business that is focused on attracting, developing, and retaining employees, as well as managing employee relations. HR activities can include recruiting and hiring, training and development, compensation and benefits administration, performance management, and employee relations.
  7. Procurement: Procurement refers to the process of acquiring goods, services, or works from an external source. This process involves identifying the need for the goods, services, or works, finding and evaluating potential suppliers, negotiating contracts, and managing the delivery and payment of the procurement. The objective of procurement is to secure the best value for money and to ensure that the goods, services, or works are delivered to meet the organization’s needs and expectations.
  8. Research and Development: Research and Development (R&D) is a function of a business that is focused on creating new products, services, and processes, as well as improving existing ones that meet the needs of customers and create a competitive advantage for the organization. R&D activities can include market research, product design, prototyping, testing, and launching new offerings. 
  9. Strategy and Planning: setting goals, determining actions to achieve those goals, and evaluating the success of those actions.

Each function is critical to the overall success of a business and can impact the other functions. Effective management of all functions is necessary for long-term success.
